Seaside township has a rich history

Karitane, on the east Otago coast at the mouth of the Waikouaiti River, was a principal Maori village which included a fortified pa on the Huriawa Peninsula off the left of picture.

Following European settlement the area hosted a whaling station. Dr Frederic Truby King, the founder of Plunket, lived here and the township’s name was used in some infant food brands and child health services.
