Serial tyre slashers strike in Dunedin and Mosgiel

Some serial tyre slashers appear to be at large in Dunedin and Mosgiel.

''We have had a run of slashed tyres ... out Mosgiel way,'' said Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson, of Dunedin.

The attacks happened overnight on Wednesday, one in Stirling Cres, two in Severn St and three in Thames St, where either one or all of the tyres were slashed.

Snr Sgt Thomson said similar slashings were reported in Green Island's Centennial Ave and Waldron Cres, while another occurred down the road in Mulford St, Concord.

''We're not saying that these are connected at all.

''What we'd like to know is if anybody has seen any suspicious activity.''

Meanwhile, a highly visible burglar woke a resident while burgling a Union St home about 5.30am on Wednesday morning, before the woman chased the offender down the street, Snr Sgt Thomson said.

''She was woken to hear her door open and a guy ran out with her Apple MacBook computer.

''She chased the guy down the street towards the Caltex service station on Great King St."

The man was described as wearing dark clothes, apart from his high-vis vest, and of skinny build.

He remains at large.

Also reported to police this week was a Wednesday night raid on a home undergoing renovation in Russell St, where an offender climbed a fence, ripped open some building paper to access the home and made off with a large number of Makita tools, Snr Sgt Thomson said.

Police had been notified of the following other tool thefts this week and Snr Sgt Thomson urged tradesmen to engrave their tools and not leave them in their work vehicles.

  •     Taieri Rd overnight Wednesday, more Makita tools taken from a work vehicle parked near a property.
  •     Tyne St overnight Thursday, a Paslode nail gun stolen from a work vehicle.
