A pair of excavators work in the early morning haze at St Clair Beach in Dunedin yesterday. Sand sausages, which protect dunes, are being repaired and replaced.

The pipe in the image was used to pump water as part of filling the sausage bags, a Dunedin City Council spokesman said.

"We will also be replacing the concrete boat ramp used by the St Clair Surf Life Saving club," he said.

"All going well, the work is expected to be completed by the end of October."
