Carolena, who photographed Skateboarder Basil, and Jemma, with her entry Beautiful Boy, both competed in the pet under 14 section and became the first photographers to tie for first place in the award.

The 19th annual wildlife photography exhibition runs until 5pm this Sunday at Otago Museum.

Museum visitors and photography fans submitted about 2800 votes for the award this year, museum organisers said.

The two winners will take home canvas prints of their photos, from Jonathan's Photo Warehouse.

The 2018 photography contest attracted the highest number of entries in the competition's history, in both the photographic (2332) and video (53) sections and the event offered a ``unique opportunity for amateur photographers to have work displayed publicly'', an event spokeswoman said.

The competition was supported by Jonathan's Photo Warehouse, Canon and the Otago Daily Times.
