Pedestrians cross the street using the newly installed Barnes Dance on the corner of Princes St and the Octagon yesterday.
The inner-city intersection was the first of eight which the Dunedin City Council will convert to Barnes Dances during the next five months, at a cost of about $1 million.
Another one will be installed on the corner of George St and the Octagon today.
The last Barnes Dance in Dunedin was in place at Cargills Corner in the 1980s.
Council transport group manager Richard Saunders said the new signals had been installed by about noon and both motorists and pedestrians quickly became accustomed to the new layout.
People still needed to be mindful of the new phasing but from the council's point of view the installation had gone smoothly, Mr Saunders said.
There were not dates set for the next installation because the council wanted to see how the new crossings coped with the influx of visitors coming to the city for Easter weekend, he said.
``We'll get through the busy weekend coming up, then we'll start looking at dates for the next ones.''
