Forsyth Barr Stadium was full of high-fliers on Saturday night - and not the kind you'd expect to find in the corporate boxes.

About 30 top skiers and snowboarders from New Zealand and the United States whisked over a snow jump to wow the 300 people gathered, with their best airborne tricks and rides along two steel rails.

The Indoor Winch Jam was the brainchild of University of Otago marketing student Cameron Sims.

''It was a student-run event, predominantly for students.

''Basically, I wanted to give them something constructive to do. You know, like, keep them from burning couches on Castle St.

''I think this was an event that has tried to show the rest of Dunedin and New Zealand that Otago students have a brain, and we are doing cool stuff.''

Organisers turned the inside of the stadium into a white paradise for skiers and snowboarders, by bringing in two truckloads of snow from Wanaka's Snow Farm.

A wakeboarding winch was used to tow athletes on to the jump.

Mr Sims was delighted with the turn-out at the event, and said it had attracted competitors from Wanaka and Queenstown, as well as six Americans.
