Southern genes credited by 'hot' MP

They breed 'em better in the south, Todd Barclay says.

It seems if a snap election was held with looks rather than policy determining power, National would still govern - with 24-year-old Mr Barclay as prime minister.

The Clutha-Southland MP has been ranked the hottest MP of the 121 in the country in a ''scientific non-biased ranking of NZ politicians based solely on appearance''.

An anonymous blogger posted the results

''developed by a focus group of 4 heterosexual men, 4 heterosexual women, 1 homo-sexual man and 1 homosexual woman''.

Also within the top 10 were National MPs - and Southlanders - Bill English (7) and Sarah Dowie (9).

The top five were rounded out by Jacinda Ardern (Labour), Gareth Hughes (Greens), Nikki Kaye (National) and Simon Bridges (National).

Mr Barclay told the Otago Daily Times yesterday the results were ''quite entertaining'' but he was not letting it go to his head.

''I would quite like to be acknowledged or recognised for doing something a bit more substantive in my role, but you take what you get,'' he said, with a laugh.

He put his success - and that of the other Southerners - down to ''good breeding genes, particularly in Dipton''.

''It's certainly provided a few laughs for the electorate office staff and some disbelief for a few of them,'' he said.

Dunedin North MP David Clark managed to crack the top 15 while Labour Party counterpart Dunedin South MP Clare Curran was 98th.

New Zealand's least hot MP according to the blog was first-time MP Mahesh Bindra, of New Zealand First.

He was followed by a National Party power trio of Gerry Brownlee, Nick Smith and Steven Joyce.
