St Clair roundabout open to traffic

The peanut-shaped roundabout in St Clair is here, after a year in the making.

The road, at the intersection of Forbury, Bay View and Allandale Rds, was not scheduled to reopen until tomorrow, but vehicles were navigating the legume-shaped junction yesterday.

Its completion has been long awaited.

Crews doing intersection improvements started work in July last year and were originally due to be finished by Christmas, but the completion date was extended six months when it was found water mains and sewer lines in the area needed upgrading.

The new completion date of June this year was then pushed back when that work to replace ageing water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure took longer than expected.

But the peanut’s presence should be worth the wait.

The roundabout was planned after 11 crashes at the intersection from 2011 to 2015.

The new alignment is expected to be safer for motorists and pedestrians.

6-7 months late due to local government planning deficiencies, not to mention way over budget. Can we trust these clowns in getting anything right? How's the water in Karitane/Waikouaiti? -another example where they can not even get a core service right.

Great video ... now let's do that again at about 3pm after the school holidays and 4.30 to 6pm peak time traffic ...

I hate to be negative here, and the idea of a round-about is a good one. However, I was driving toward St Clair passing the 4Square on my left. There was a cyclist coming up behind me. A woman who was parked outside the 4Square store opened her car door, I had to stop as there was not enough room for me to keep driving, and the cyclist nearly ended up hurtling into her driver's door. It's too narrow. Will have to be revisited, or they're going to have to stop cars parking at the narrowest point. I understand it is the responsibility of the driver to wait until it is safe to open the door, but essentially there is not enough room for a car to pass if a parked car has an open door, it's just asking for trouble.
