Firefighters were called to a Primus stove fire in Dunedin today.
A Fire service spokesman said a crew from Willowbank Station were called to a house in Maybank St in Northeast Valley about 9.50am.
Due to a scheduled power cut, a person was cooking a meal outside the house with a Primus stove .
When the stove began "flaring'' and caught fire they called the Fire Service.
"They were concerned it was going to explode and set the surrounding area on fire.''
The crew extinguished the fire with a bucket of water.
Before the crew departed at 10.10am, it gave the person some fire safety advice, he said.
The Primus stove, the first pressurised-burner kerosene stove, was developed in Sweden in 1892.
