Strict conditions for assault-accused

A man who has been charged after the alleged "snatching" of a young boy at South Dunedin, on Monday, is under 24-hour supervision and police say they have no concerns he will be any danger to the public.

The 45-year-old man allegedly snatched an 8-year-old boy as he waited for his mother outside a public toilet in Dunedin's Marlow Park.

The man is alleged to have grabbed the boy from behind and threatened him, letting him go about 50m from where he was grabbed after members of the public gave chase.

The man was caught in sand dunes at St Kilda beach, and was held until police arrived.

He appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday on a Crimes Act charge of assault.

Judge Dale Clarkson, of Auckland, remanded the man to April 20, for a psychiatric report on his competence to stand trial.

Counsel Sarah Saunderson-Warner successfully sought interim name suppression for the man, who had an intellectual disability.

Detective Malcolm Inglis said the man had strict bail conditions.

He had been bailed to an address where he was under 24-hour supervision in a safe environment.

The other condition of his bail was to not have any contact with children.
