It must be the painting and home improvement season.

Recent fine summer weather has been greeted by clouds of sanding and the laying on of much external paint around Dunedin..

In one example, Matt Dawson, of Selwyn St, Northeast Valley, made his wife, Angela Dawson, considerably happier by spray painting yesterday his container "man cave" in a relatively discreet shade of khaki green.

"I'm stoked. It makes the property look 100% better," Mr Dawson said after completing the job.

For some other home improvers, seemingly massively challenging tasks have brought both sides of extended families closer together.

Family members from both sides of the family, and mostly from Auckland, have headed south and pitched in to paint the outside of a house in Richardson St, St Kilda, owned by city chef Russell Bartlett (32) and his partner, Hannah Joseph.
