Surgery after pool accident

A softball player who was seriously injured at Moana Pool, sustaining suspected spinal injuries, is on the mend.

The player, from Canterbury, competed in the South Island under-18 boys and girls open club championships in Dunedin last week and had been relaxing at the pool with teammates last Friday, but was injured after reportedly diving into a pool.

Otago Softball operations manager Stacey Wardell said the player was flown to Christchurch and surgery there had been successful.

The player’s family reported he was able to move all his limbs after surgery, Ms Wardell said.

The family particularly wished to acknowledge the response of a lifeguard at the pool named Carly, as well as the player’s Kaiapoi Knights teammates.
