Dunedin educator and performer Tahu Mackenzie is devastated after several of her flamboyant performance outfits were stolen from the boot of her unlocked car.

The 28-year-old Orokonui Ecosanctuary educator went to her car, which was parked in Orbell St, Dalmore, about 7am yesterday to find it open. Missing was a purple hard-cover suitcase with performance dresses, jewellery, wigs and a selection of other pieces.

Her partner's white hard-cover case was also taken, but it was empty.

Dunedin police had been contacted about the theft and were interested in any sightings of suspicious people in the area.

Ms Mackenzie, lead singer of Dunedin band Tahu and the Takahes, said the dresses had much sentimental value.

''I would really, really love those outfits back, no questions asked. [They are] my really, really best ones,'' she said.

''They are really precious to me and they have a lot of sentimental value.''

The dresses were easily identifiable. Outfits including a gold dress, a tiger-styled outfit, a black sparkly Indian shawl, a red rose dress, and a gold spider necklace were missing.

Ms Mackenzie said she felt silly for leaving her car unlocked. .

''I was really stupid. I feel really stupid now.

''It would mean everything to me to get them back because I've had a lot of them for more than 10 years [and] I spent a long time making them.''

The items could be left at the office of the Otago Daily Times, in Lower Stuart St.
