Three-day Port Chalmers market starting soon

A new three-day indoor market is being planned for Port Chalmers, with everything from produce to designer gear to be sold, in the hope it will provide a weekend gathering point for the West Harbour community.

The "Milnes Market" will be held in a George St building every second weekend from August 8.

Building owner Em Mallam said 10 stall spaces would be available each day, with Friday nights allocated to locally-grown produce and specialty items, Saturdays to a garage-sale, clear-out-your-house day and Sundays to artists, designers and collectors.

"We want to create a bit of a buzz. If it takes off, we could hold it every weekend."

The business community supported the idea, with many shops and galleries staying open on Friday nights, she said.

Sunday markets would also provide an opportunity for the many West Harbour artists, who often could not afford retail space, to sell their wares.

At each market, a table would be set aside for a charity or school to raise awareness or funds.
