The Tirohanga Camp ablutions block is to be replaced.

The new facility will include a meeting room, laundry, drying room, and paraplegic toilet and shower.

Work will cost $110,000, plus GST.

Camp committee chairman John Speirs said the camp had been given three grants from the Otago Community Trust, the Alexander McMillan Trust, and the Synod of Otago and Southland, worth a total of $75,000.

It had applied for another grant worth $5000 and was almost able to pay the remaining cost with money it had in the bank, he said.

The meeting room would be an asset to the camp and it would give patrons an area apart from the hall they could use during bad weather.

The old ablutions block was due to be knocked down this month.

From December 8, the Christian group Mobile Mission Maintenance would be on site, working on the new building.

They were to take a break for Christmas and return in the new year with the goal of completing the new hall in January or February.

The hall was regularly used by school, church, and other community groups and was busiest in the first and last school terms of the year, Mr Speirs said.

As well as providing indoor accommodation for 90 people, and space to pitch tents, the camp included activities such as a water slide and confidence course.

A lot of money had been spent on the camp in recent years. The committee had put in a water treatment plant, a sewage treatment plant, and had purchased a block of neighbouring land as a noise buffer, Mr Speirs said.

''The camp is in really good heart. We have a really good community. With recent developments the infrastructure is a sound position,'' he said.

Tirohanga Camp is owned by the Foundation Trust of Otago (Presbyterian Church) and is operated by the Tirohanga Campsite Committee.
