Today the last day for mail votes

Otago voters wanting to have their say on who will run their city, district and regional councils, and their health board for the next three years, need to take action today.

Voters across the region have been told today is the last day people posting their votes could be absolutely certain they would arrive in time.

For those unable to do so, all council offices had polling booths open until noon on Saturday.

Dunedin electoral officer Pam Jordan said yesterday votes had to be received by that time.

The Dunedin City Council and the Clutha and Waitaki District Councils' votes are being counted by Christchurch company electionz.com.

A spokesman said returns were up about 10% across the 35 local governments the company was contracted to.

He thought the Auckland super-city debate may have turned people's minds to local government issues.

Scrutineers were able to be present while the vote was counted, though he understood only one from Dunedin had suggested they intended to travel to Christchurch.
