The University of Otago's department of tourism has been ranked among the top performing university departments in New Zealand.
The department, based in the Otago Business School, was judged 14th in the world in the Shanghai Rankings Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017 for hospitality and tourism management.
That made it the top-ranked among New Zealand universities in that subject area and the second highest-ranking department in the country across all disciplines.
Department head Prof Neil Carr said it was gratifying to receive such recognition and attributed its success to staff's devotion to their research.
``It's a great affirmation of the hard work of everyone in the department.''
The department was recently ranked 17th in the world in the Top 100 2017 Eduniversal Best Masters Ranking for tourism and event management.
