Emergency services are at the scene after a bus full of cruise ship passengers and a campervan collided near Portobello this morning.

The crash happened just after 9am on Portobello Rd near the intersection with Nicholas St.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand and St John Ambulance staff were at the scene treating a small number of people for shock, including the campervan driver's wife.

The Ritchies tour bus had a smashed window and the campervan had a hole ripped into it in the sleeping area above where the driver sits.

The driver of the campervan said he had just set off from his Portobello home en route for his holiday house in Central Otago before the crash happened.

Most of the cruise ship passengers had been transported by Fulton Hogan work vans to a nearby Portobello pub.

A section of Portobello Rd, near the crash, will be closed while police investigate.
