Tourists trapped by rising water rescued

The Austrian tourists trapped by rising waters outside a reserve in Trotters Gorge near Palmerston were this afternoon rescued by locals using 4WD vehicles.

All 10 tourists are said to be safe and well.

Earlier today, the Austrian tourists were trapped in a domain in Trotters Gorge after heavy rain at the weekend turned two fords in the access road into raging torrents of water, police said.

Police from Palmerston went to Trotters Gorge in the afternoon to check on the fords, which would have been dry when the group went in to the Gorge, but became "raging torrents".

Senior Constable Darrin Low, of Hampden, said the group contacted police about 2pm yesterday and asked police to come and rescue them.

They said they had been in the gorge since Thursday, had six vehicles and enough food for two more days.

Police had not been able to contact the group again since the call.
