Tree falls on Portobello Rd

Part of Portobello Rd in Dunedin is partially blocked after a tree fell on the road this afternoon.

The tree and rocks had come down from a cliff above the road, near the Vauxhall Yacht Club.

Police said they were alerted at 1.10pm. The tree was blocking three-quarters of the road and motorists were going on to the wrong side of the road to avoid it.

A member of the public with a chainsaw started cutting the tree to clear the road before contractors arrived to tackle the job.

Police were at the scene are at the scene directing traffic, and the road was reduced to one lane.
