Some University of Otago staff will join students today in a protest against Government proposals to cut the size of governing university councils.
And the Otago University Council meeting this afternoon will consider a recommendation from the university financial services director to increase Otago domestic student tuition fees by 4% next year.
Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce last week announced proposals to cut university council membership from its current maximum of 20 to 12, arguing this would result in more efficient and ''nimble'' decision-making.
The Otago council has 17 members.
Students planned to gather outside the Otago University Students' Association office at 10am and march to the university clocktower building and stage a protest rally, organisers said.
Labour tertiary education spokesman Grant Robertson, a former president of the Otago association, will be among the speakers.
