Voters responding to deadline

A steady stream of enrolments has been coming in to the office of the Dunedin South registrar of electors Dee Vickers as voters ensure they meet today's enrolment deadline for the forthcoming postal referendum.

Today is the last day for eligible people to enrol if they wish to vote.

Ms Vickers said the referendum seemed to be generating considerable interest, as people were taking the trouble to ensure they were properly enrolled.

The first lot of voting papers for those on the main roll (those enrolled by July 10) will go out tomorrow, and the posting for later enrolments on August 4.

Ms Vickers said enrolled voters who might have moved since July 10 and who had not organised to have their mail forwarded to their new address should advise the electoral office.

Their papers could then be cancelled and new ones issued.

Anyone in this position could telephone 0800-367-656 or visit the website www.elections.org.nzVoting on the referendum question "Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?" will close on August 21.
