Wallet snatched from man on street

An opportunist thief who wrenched a wallet out of a man's hands is being sought by Dunedin police.

Sergeant Nathan White, of Dunedin, said a man was standing outside the ANZ bank in King Edward St and was looking through his wallet when it was snatched by another man as he ran past about 9am.

''He had his wallet open and was looking through it, or looking for something in there, and a man has come past and grabbed his wallet and kept going. It appears to be an opportunist type thing,'' Sgt White said.

Whether there was money in the wallet, or how much, had yet to be confirmed.

At least one witness had been interviewed by police, who were unable to locate the offender immediately after the incident, Sgt White said.

''He hasn't stopped and demanded the wallet. There were no threats or anything like that,'' he said.

He urged anyone who witnessed the incident, or knew anything about it, to contact Dunedin police.

The offender was described as being in his early or mid-20s, of medium build, with light brown skin and dark hair.

He was wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.
