A man wanted by police gave them the slip after he was found sleeping in the back of a stolen car yesterday morning.
Acting Senior Sergeant Paul McLaughlan said police patrolling the Corstorphine area stopped to check the vehicle, which had been stolen from a Dunedin address.
A 28-year-old man, asleep in the back seat of the car, fled on foot after he was disturbed.
Acting Snr Sgt McLaughlan said the man was wanted by police after breaching his bail earlier this year.
A cordon was put in place but police were unable to locate the man.
He is described as Maori, 165cm tall, of medium to thin build, with shoulder-length hair and a rats tail, and wearing dark jeans and singlet.
The man, who has gang connections, was not considered dangerous, he said.
