Wanted person gets photo in the paper twice

Police did not have to go far in finding "a person of interest" after his photograph featured twice in The Star community newspaper yesterday.

In their weekly "On the beat" column, Dunedin police had a mugshot of Tyrone Warren Smith (17), identifying him as a person of interest.

However, eagle-eyed readers would have recognised his photograph and name appearing on page 8 of the community newspaper.

Under the headline "Training opportunities for the young", Mr Smith was snapped at a fundraising event in the Octagon last week.

Police confirmed Mr Smith handed himself in yesterday.

His warrant to arrest was withdrawn after he made a voluntary appearance in the Dunedin District Court.

A Dunedin police spokeswoman said they were pleased publicity prompted Mr Smith to make the decision to appear in court.
