Mahinerangi youngsters Becky (5, left) and Ollie (3) Vaughan play in the snow under mum and dad Hayley and Dave Vaughan's frozen washing on Waipori Station yesterday.

Mrs Vaughan said the family woke to 22cm of snow yesterday morning.

''The washing is still frozen on the line,'' she said at 4pm yesterday.

Snow in the Lake Mahinerangi area was not unusual, and the family and farm were prepared, although it was still ''pretty early'' for it.

''We didn't expect this much.''

Much of the area, including around Lee Stream and Hindon, was under a blanket of snow yesterday.

''The kids are trying to make snowmen, but the snow's too loose, really.''

A snow plough was used to clear roads in the morning and the roads were ''fine'' by the afternoon.

Metservice meteorologist Nick Zacher said yesterday the cold snap in the South was due to fade over the next few days, but it would still be ''chilly'' overnight.

All severe weather warnings for the Otago region had been lifted, he said.
