St Hilda's Collegiate School pupil Ellen Mamier (16) learns the ways of the flute with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra's Feby Idrus on Saturday.

Twenty young guest players joined 25 members of the orchestra at a workshop at Hanover Hall.

The combined orchestra is led by principal guest conductor Simon Over from the United Kingdom.

The aim was provide an opportunity for aspiring orchestral players to play with professional orchestra counterparts to encourage them to continue studying their instruments.

The hope was the young talents would eventually join the orchestra.

Together they played Franz Schubert's Symphony No 5 (I. allegro, III. menuetto) and Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet (Suite No 2, Montagues and Capulets).
