Mark Carwardine is travelling around the country for two weeks researching articles for two wildlife magazines and The Telegraph newspaper.
Since arriving in New Zealand on November 15, he had visited kea at Fox Glacier, kiwi and sharks on and near Stewart Island and tuatara in Invercargill. He will arrive in Dunedin on Monday.
As part of his two-day visit, he would visit the Otago Peninsula to view the yellow-eyed penguins and albatross.
Almost 3.5 million people have watched the 2009 clip "Shagged by a rare parrot" on the video-sharing site YouTube which features the kakapo Sirocco attempting to mate with Mr Carwardine.
The two-minute clip shows Sirocco, who is not part of the breeding programme on Codfish Island, circle the zoologist before jumping on his head, much to the amusement of television presenter Stephen Fry.
In the clip, Sirocco is removed by a Department of Conservation ranger after his overzealous affection caused cuts to the back of Mr Carwardine's head.
