Chosen to study overseas

Logan Park High School year 13 pupil Annie Welvaert has been selected to take part in an international science school in Sydney in July.

Annie (17), who is studying French and classics, as well as physics and other science subjects, was `very pleased" to be selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand to attend the Prof Harry Messel International Science School.

The two-week long school, which starts on July 3, will focus on "light and matter" and would be "a step in the right direction" in pursuing her physics interests, she said.

Five New Zealand pupils have been selected to join like-minded pupils from 10 other countries at the school.

Annie will be supported by the Talented School Students Travel Award, which is funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and administered by the society. About 70% of air travel and registration costs are funded.

Alison Macharg (17), a pupil at Wakatipu High School, Queenstown, is one of 14 pupils selected by the society to attend Biofutures, in Brisbane, Australia on July 3-9. This residential forum enables senior pupils to explore cutting edge technologies.

Alice Alsweiler (18), who attends James Hargest College, Invercargill, is one of four pupils from throughout the country selected by the society to represent New Zealand at the 4th APEC Youth Science Forum in Thailand (August 20-26).

Debbie Woodhall, of the society, said 33 year 12 and 13 pupils from throughout New Zealand were selected from more than 300 science applicants to attend a series of international science and technology events around the world, funded by the ministry travel award.
