Violent protests in Chile have profound implications for all countries, including New Zealand, Prof Robert Patman says.

The Dunedin-based international affairs expert says mass protests in the formerly stable South American nation are a global warning to governments about the dire consequences of unchecked inequality.

"People who are disadvantaged in the 21st Century have more means to express their discontent,'' Prof Patman says.

"Economic growth every year, unless... it is distributed to a wider number of people, can still sow the seeds of an uprising.''
