The Ministry of Education has revealed 36 schools that have buildings which leak.
All but one of the schools are in the North Island, with 24 in Auckland. The number of schools with leaking buildings is up from 14 in March.
The ministry said it was too early to say whether the buildings suffered from leaky-building syndrome or simply leaked.
Any health and safety issues were fixed immediately to ensure students' safety, the ministry's implementation manager of schooling property Brian Mitchell said.
"The ministry is being proactive in identifying leaky building issues and getting corrective action under way," he told The New Zealand Herald.
He said the ministry has started legal action to recover almost $7 million for the costs of repairing four schools with leaky-building syndrome.
