Baby recovering well after tumour removed

Wellington Hospital doctors who removed a massive tumour from the abdomen of an East Timorese baby this week say the boy is recovering well.

Surgeons cut the 3.3kg benign tumour from 14-month-old Alex Gonzaga at the hospital on Sunday.

The tumour was almost one third of the boy's body weight.

Bill Day, president of the Port Nicholson Rotary Club that sponsored the project, said Alex was eating, moving about and well on the way to recovery.

"He's looking good, he's standing up holding on to mum, smiling and playing with toys -- throwing things on the floor -- you wouldn't think there was anything wrong with him," he told The Associated Press.

Doctors expected the boy to go home in about 10 days.
