Bank customers caught up in armed robbery

Auckland police were today hunting an audacious robber who terrorised staff and customers during an armed bank raid yesterday.

The robber, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and dark sunglasses, brazenly walked into a crowded Albany Westfield Mall's National Bank at 2pm yesterday.

CCTV cameras showed he approached a teller and pulled out a pistol before moving towards another teller, who was with a customer.

The man forced the customer to stay on his knees while the teller pulled notes from her till.

The robber grabbed the notes using his free hand and appeared to demand that she reach for more.

Then, gripping a fat wad of cash, the man appeared to point his pistol towards the roof and addressed the other tellers in the row.

Investigation head Detective Sergeant Adam Lough said the man was very aggressive.

He appeared to be Asian, in his 20s and of medium to athletic build.

The bank's cameras show him wearing a long-sleeved grey or blue hoodie, with a white pattern on it.

Mr Lough appealed to anyone who saw the robber or knew who he was to contact police.
