The Department of Internal Affairs is reviewing the way people access Births, Deaths and Marriages records.
At present people can access the records and do so for a variety of reasons, including establishing their identity or trace their family history.
Internal Affairs Minister Peter Dunne announced today that the Government would review the rules around public access to the records.
The existing rules came into force in 2009, and it was required they would be reviewed after five years, he said.
Mr Dunne said the review would allow the Government to see whether current rules on how people accessed government-held birth, death, marriage, civil union and name change records were adequate and effective.
