Body recovered from Whanganui River

A man's body was recovered from the Whanganui River about 6:30am today.

Police said a member of the public saw the body in the river near Aramoho and called emergency services.

The body was recovered after officers attended the scene.

An investigation has been launched and inquiries were underway to confirm the man's identity and to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

Police said a post-mortem was scheduled for tomorrow at the Palmerston North Hospital.

As a mark of respect, local iwi have placed a rahui on the lower section of the Whanganui River below Mosquito Point.

The rahui will be in place from 3pm today until 3pm tomorrow and iwi ask people to refrain from fishing in the river or using it for recreational activities while the rahui is in effect.
