A retail giant is apologising after a customer found a nasty surprise in his pre-packed bag of salad.
3News reported that Napier man Graeme Harris was less than impressed when he uncovered a cigarette butt in a Pam's Greek salad he purchased from Pak'n Save Tamatea at the weekend.
Mr Harris told 3News the discovery left him feeling "disgusted and a little bit sick".
Today, a Foodstuffs spokeswoman said the company "sincerely apologised to our customer for any upset caused".
She said Foodstuffs had been in contact with the customer regarding the issue, and took any incidence of foreign matter in its products extremely seriously.
She said the "foreign matter" would be sent to the supplier or laboratory for testing.
"A full investigation with the supplier has commenced and they are currently working through this process.
"In addition, our supplier has a risk management plan in place to minimise the risk of this occurring and to date, we are not aware of any other similar issues with this product or batch."
She said Foodstuffs were happy to refund Mr Harris, as well as provide him with a voucher for the inconvenience.
