Dixon found guilty of murder

Antonie Dixon was today found guilty of murder for a second time by a jury which threw out his plea of insanity.

A High Court jury in Auckland has found Dixon guilty of murdering James Te Aute and causing grievous bodily harm to Renee Gunbie and Simonne Butler.

The Crown said that Dixon shot dead Mr Te Aute in Auckland while on the run from police after attacking the two women with a samurai sword at Pipiroa, near Thames, in January 2003.

Dixon, 40 was also found guilty of kidnap, firing a machine gun with intent, using a firearm against a police officer,

He was found guilty of the offences in 2005 and jailed for life but the convictions were set aside last year by the Court of Appeal which suppressed the reasons for its decision, and ordered a retrial.

Dixon's defence argued that he should found not guilty on the grounds of insanity but the Crown said that although he suffered from a severe personality disorder he knew what he was doing.
