An off-duty police officer was allegedly beaten by four men while cycling early yesterday morning.
The Herald on Sunday said the Wanganui officer rode past the four, who called out to him.
He turned around to talk and was allegedly attacked, suffering facial injuries and being knocked unconscious.
"It's a despicable act, regardless of the victim's chosen career path," Acting Sergeant Nick Brunger told the newspaper.
"Obviously it is close to home knowing that he is a member of the police."
The officer was recuperating at home.
A 35-year-old Wanganui man appeared in court yesterday and was remanded in custody until Tuesday.
