An elderly man died after he was hit by a ute near Palmerston North this morning.
Feilding police said it appeared the 84-year-old had been crossing Reids Line in Bunnythorpe to fetch his mail around 9am.
The driver stopped and called emergency services but left before police arrived.
The elderly man was to taken Palmerston North hospital with serious injuries but died soon after.
Police said the driver got in touch later in the day and was now helping with their investigation.
