A 16-year-old driving without a licence died and two people were injured in a head-on crash near Pahiatua late last night.
Police said the cars crashed about 11.35pm on State Highway 2, Mangamutu, 5km south of Pahiatua.
A Ford Falcon stationwagon crossed the centre line, colliding head-on with a Mazda.
The 16-year old unlicensed driver of the Ford died at the scene.
A preliminary examination indicated driver inexperience, alcohol, and the condition of the Ford motor vehicle contributed to the crash, police said.
The female driver of the Mazda was in a serious condition and the male passenger of the Ford was in a moderate condition.
Both were taken to Palmerston North Hospital.
The name of the dead teen would not be released until next of kin had been told.
