Footage shows man using slain woman's eftpos card

A court has been shown CCTV footage of a man attempting to make withdrawals of up to $1000 using the eftpos card of murdered woman Kiko Li.

A fraud investigator for ANZ National Bank told the court there were four unsuccessful attempts to check the balance and withdraw money from Kiko Li's eftpos card in Auckland on May 19, 2010, soon after she was killed, according to the prosecution case.

The Crown alleges Honglin Yu and his friend Yongxin Li stabbed Kiko Li.

Yu is on trial at the High Court at Auckland and has pleaded not guilty to murdering the 18-year-old and stealing her eftpos card.

Kiko Li was found stabbed to death in the boot of her abandoned car in Hamilton.

The court heard that two attempts to use the card were made at an ATM in Mt Albert and two more 30 minutes later at an ATM in St Heliers.

Fraud investigator Steven Bleakley said all four attempts were unsuccessful because the wrong pin number was used.

The court watched CCTV footage of a man trying to use Li's card at the eftpos machine in St Heliers, where he attempted to make a withdrawal of $1000.

Mr Bleakley said the card was retained after the fourth failed attempt. He said that was standard procedure.

He also told the court that Yu's bank account had a balance of $27.45 on May 17 2010.

During the Crown's opening on Monday, prosecutor Aaron Perkins said Yu thought he knew Kiko Li's pin number but he was wrong.

"The Crown case is that you will have little doubt that Yu is at the second ATM trying to get money.''

The trial is set down for three weeks and will hear from 44 witnesses.

Yu's friend Yongxin Li pleaded guilty to murdering Kiko and has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 16 years.
