A former male nurse already sentenced for sexually grooming teenage girls has been fined $3000 for prescribing drugs to a pregnant woman.

Keith Paora Curry, Plunket's first male nurse, had his nurse's registration cancelled when he was jailed last year for sexually grooming two girls, aged 14 and 15, in 2009.

The New Zealand Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal today held a tribunal hearing for a second charge brought against him.

On July 25, 2009, Curry prescribed Maxolon and Paramax to a 19-year-old patient who was six to eight weeks pregnant while he was working at the Hokianga Health Centre.

The Professional Conduct Committee brought the charge against Curry as he wasn't authorised to prescribe the medication, and the drugs should never have been prescribed to a pregnant woman.

The Tribunal upheld the charge, ordering Curry to pay a fine of $3000 for his actions and to pay 30 per cent of the tribunal, investigation and prosecution costs, which are not yet known.

Under the law, Curry can re-apply for his nurse's registration despite being struck off last year.

The Tribunal ordered that if he does re-apply, he has to go through an educative programme on medication management and administration of medication, and must be supervised for his first 12 months back, said tribunal executive officer Gay Fraser.

Ms Fraser said the tribunal has also censured Curry, to show their "strong disapproval''.

The hearing was split between Whangarei and Auckland, as planes could not land in Whangarei today. Half the tribunal phoned in from a conference room at Auckland Airport, while the other half were based in Whangarei said Ms Fraser.

Three witnesses gave information today; the doctor on duty on the day, Dr Bowker, midwife Ms Bowker, and Ms Christine Dorsey.

Curry lost his nurse's registration and was sentenced to one year in jail after a court case in May last year.

Between June and September 2009 he set up a fake internet profile pretending to be an 18-year-old male, while he was 46.

Curry developed an online relationship with the two girls where he communicated with them both online and via text message - including messages which were sexual in nature.

When both girls became aware of Curry's age they ceased all contact with him.
