Gen Y using public transport more

A new report highlights the growing trend in Generation Y's use of public transport - with a prediction that close to 50% of those aged 15 to 35 would be using it in the next five years.

The New Zealand Transport Agency's Public Transport and the Next Generation report indicated the age-group's use of public transportation currently sits at 35.3%, with the numbers expected to sit at 48.7% if no improvements to the system were made.

These numbers were expected to grow to 53.7% if public transportation was improved.

As a result the NZTA has made a number of recommendations, including a greater cost-benefit analysis of the system, smarter ticketing options that reward regular users, real-time information and free bonus trips or promotions.

The Greens have responded to the research with calls for the Government to rethink its transport spending priorities.

Transport spokeswoman Julie Anne Genter said this shows young people want to continue using public transport.

"It's crystal clear that people want fast, affordable and efficient public transport, but the Government continues to pour billions into a few expensive highways instead."

Other key findings

• There was higher demand for active transport modes e.g. walking and cycling

• Ninety percent of generation Y expected a change in their travel patterns in the next five years

• Generation Y's listed increased service frequency during peak hours, improved coverage, bus priority lanes, free service transfers as top priorities.

• The older generation listed improved coverage, increased peak, evening and weekend services, integrated ticketing and shorter trip times as top priorities.
