Hang glider pilot killed in crash

A 47-year-old hang glider pilot is dead after a crash in the Paekakariki Hill area north of Wellington.

The Horowhenua man was reported missing about 11pm yesterday and search and rescue teams and the Westpac Rescue helicopter were called in.

Kapiti police Senior Sergeant Alasdair Macmillan said the helicopter began searching the area shortly before 2am today, and discovered the wreckage of the hang glider about 300m east of a top-dressing strip at the top of the hill.

The name of the man would not be released until all next of kin had been advised, Mr Macmillan said.

The Civil Aviation Authority will investigate.
