Police have asked the crown solicitor to review the circumstances of the death and current charge and consider whether a more serious charge should be laid.
The man arrested faces a charge of careless use of a firearm causing death and is due to appear in the Taupo District Court on Wednesday.
"This charge has historically been preferred in most hunting related deaths. As this investigation progresses it is clear there are elements of the circumstances of Ms Ives' death that differ from these other hunting related deaths that police have previously dealt with," officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Todd Pearce, said.
"Given these differing circumstances, it is important that the appropriateness of the current charge be reviewed."
But it was unlikely the review would be completed before the first court appearance next week.
"I envisage that a two week remand will be sought for this process to be completed."
Hundreds of people turned out yesterday to say goodbye to Ms Ives at a memorial service near Nelson where she grew up.
Ms Ives, 25, a Lower Hutt school teacher, was shot dead last Friday while brushing her teeth on a camping holiday near Turangi after allegedly being mistaken for a deer or possum by a man who was spotlighting.
Her father, Malcolm Ives said her death was "an awful, preventable, wasteful accident".
