Sonny Fai went missing off Bethell's Beach
The New Zealand Warriors player went missing at a West Auckland beach on January 4 after going into the water to save his brother and four cousins.
Extensive searches of the Bethells Beach area failed to find his body.
Fai, who was 20, made his National Rugby League debut last year and went on to play 15 times as a second rower and centre, scoring 15 tries.
Services were held for Fai at the Samoan Methodist Church in Otahuhu and at Bethells Beach.
The Warriors dedicated their home match against South Sydney in April to him.
