Jail for man who pushed girlfriend into duck pond

A Nelson man who pushed his girlfriend into a duck pond after an argument and repeatedly punched his mother in the face has been jailed.

Max Reading, 24, was sentenced in Nelson District Court on Friday to 10 months imprisonment after previously admitting two charges of assaulting a female, intentional damage and one of providing false details, The Nelson Mail reported.

Police said that on January 22 an argument began between Reading and his girlfriend while at Queen's Gardens, Nelson and ended with him twice pushing her in a duck pond.

When they returned home he punched his mother twice on the nose and once in the eye, causing her to fall to the ground in a daze, and then kicked his girlfriend in the shin and struck her on the side of the face.

His mother required hospital treatment for a severely swollen eye and a small cut to the nose, while his girlfriend suffered bruising to her leg and facial swelling.

Sentencing Reading, Judge Tony Zohrab said he was no stranger to the court, having served prison terms in the past.

He also banned him from driving for eight months for driving with excess breath-alcohol for which he had failed to appear at sentencing last year.
