June date set for Weatherston hearing in Court of Appeal

Clayton Weatherston's appeal hearing against his murder conviction will be heard by the Court of Appeal in Wellington on June 9.

In July, Weatherston was convicted of murdering Sophie Elliott (22) in her home at Ravensbourne in Dunedin, on January 9 last year.

The former University of Otago staff member stabbed or cut former girlfriend Miss Elliott 216 times in her bedroom.

In October, Weatherston indicated his intention to appeal his murder conviction.

The grounds for Weatherston's appeal are not yet known, although his lawyer Robert Lithgow QC has said the conviction came about after the public's "constant baying for blood", which he believed was not the way trials should be decided.

When asked yesterday what grounds his client was appealing on, Mr Lithgow said reporters kept asking him the same "childish" questions.

He then hung up.

The hearing will be before three judges.
