Libby's accused killer 'joined search for her'

Teenager Liberty Templeman's alleged killer joined in the search for her when she went missing, according to the social networking site Bebo.

Fifteen-year-old Liberty, known as Libby, was found dead beside Kerikeri's Wairoa Stream last Sunday after disappearing on the way to meet a boyfriend.

A 14-year-old boy appeared in Kaikohe Youth Court on Friday charged with her murder and indecent assault.

Writing on Bebo, one of Libby's friends Connor Brough said: "This makes NO SENSE!!! How CAN IT BE...?!?!?! He was searching with us on Sunday for most of the day!", The Sunday Star Times reported today.

Police have refused to say how Libby died. They said Libby and the boy were friends and both went to Kerikeri High School but he was not her boyfriend.

More than 1000 people farewelled Libby at a funeral service in Kerikeri yesterday.

Despite the sadness, it was a colourful occasion after Libby's parents Andrew and Rebecca Templeman asked mourners not to wear black.

"Come with colour and come with a smile to a celebration of Libby's life," they said.

Many chose to wear orange --Libby's favourite colour.

Her orange painted casket rested on the stage where last month budding actor performed in the local pantomime.

She was described in tributes as a funny, loving friend and a born performer.

Kerikeri High School chaplain Stuart Angus asked Liberty's parents for forgiveness on behalf of the community.

"We are sorry for what happened to Liberty happened in our community, and...we humbly ask that you forgive us," the Reverend Stuart Angus said The Templemans moved from Essex, in England, to Kerikeri a couple of years ago for a better life but recently relocated to Auckland.

At the end of the service 15 helium-filled balloons -- each of representing a year in the short life of Libby -- were released into the sky over Kerikeri.

Sobbing teenagers placed sprigs of rosemary in the black hearse decked with orange ribbons, and stood hugging and weeping as it was driven away.

Libby was later cremated at a private service in Kerikeri.

The accused boy will reappear in court on November 17.
