Man arrested over Lower Hutt kidnapping

Police have made an arrest over the kidnapping and beating of a man at gunpoint in Lower Hutt in February.

Detective Sergeant Brendan Mears said police had arrested a 38-year-old man in relation to the February 5 attack in Stokes Valley.

He said the 63-year-old victim had gone to meet someone on George Street about 10pm.

He was kidnapped, dragged into a stolen car at gunpoint, and beaten up before being left in a parking lot behind the Stokes Valley fire station.

"The victim regained consciousness and was able to leave the car at daybreak to alert police," Mr Mears said.

He received multiple facial injuries, which had required reconstructive surgery.

Further arrests in the case were not ruled out, Mr Mears said.

The arrested man had been charged with aggravated robbery, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, kidnapping, using a firearm in the commission of a crime and arson.

He would be appearing in Lower Hutt District Court today, and Mr Mears said police would be opposing bail.
